A multiple hill section of the Metacomet, with a large gravel pit, historic stone fences, and some very old trees.

The Hatchett Hill section of the Metacomet Trail.

Summary

This segment of the Metacomet Trail starts at the south from Hatchett Hill Rd and ends in the North near Rt 20 and the beginning of the trail that overlooks Newgate Prison.

The initial section of the hike can be easily lost, as there is a quick turn to the right immediately after entering the woods. For some reason, the trail also appears to go straight rather than turn, so be careful.

After ascending to the top of ridge, the trail mellows and is fairly straightforward, through it lacks much in the way of views. The top of the ridge eventually summits and then there is a moderately steep descent followed by a somewhat steeper descent to a notch in the ridge that used to be a short line railway.

The descent crosses the notch and then rises again to the second summit, followed fairly shortly by the final descent toward Rt 20.

High tension lines stand above a road, with everything backlit by a brilliant and visible sun A view of sky (blue with thin cirrus clouds), a tall dead pine and a shorter living pine with yellowish-green needles. Snow is bright on the ground. A rusty disk nailed to a pine tree. Grey spires of wood with snow cornices - and a warm lit tree trunk in the more distant background. A root forms a sort of twisted three-legged stool.
