Tariffville Gorge - Metacomet Trail

A pleasant trail with good views of a river and a large pond.

Summary

The trail ascends from the parking area very steeply. This section can be quite treacherous if icy or wet. Once on the ridge, there are several outlooks onto the Farmington River, and the trail is otherwise mild. Like many portions of this area on the Metacomet, the trail passes over partly disintegrated summits under evergreens like hemlock and various deciduous trees.

A last rise brings the trail to the main summit. This can be a nice place for a rest and picnic, but it is even better to continue without the trail down the north side of the summit and enjoy the views from the west facing cliff edge there.

The trail can be completed by following the blazes down to the road, or you can turn back from here.

Note that the north trending bridge across the river from the location of the trailhead, which is shown on the map, no longer exists.

A steeply descending dirt path with a large dark tree trunk directly ahead and others in the background tilting more and more to the right on the right side of the image. An array of trees, sidelit by the sun to the right, one of them huge, old and gnarly. The low winter sunlight shows the texture of brown wood, marked by a few deep and weaving worm-like trails Tangled age blackened branches piled against a living trunk. A lone dark horse grazes in a pastel yellow-green field between two bands of grey trees. A split-rail fence with a gate separates the field from the background trees.
