A gentle start with a steep final climb to an exposed summit cliff. Fine views, and an extended descent.

Trail Map for the Imp Face Loop

Summary

This loop is a beautiful forest walk, though perhaps a bit long for the amount of scenic exposure. The shorter leg leads to the Imp Face cliff, which offers some of the best views of Mt. Madison in the White Mountains. Because the trail is short, the cliff may be crowded, at least during the summer season.

The first part of the trail starts shallow and smooth, crosses a pretty stream and eventually climbs steeply to the top of the Imp Face cliff (which can be seen from the road when driving north from Pinkham Notch). The second part of the trail is long but largely flat or shallowly descending. It is pretty forested country but offers very few views considering its length and situation.

A forested ridge, interrupted by a tall cliff, crosses upward from left to right. Framed by bushes and trees this view shows mountains and a bright sky to the north. The alpine summit cone of Mt. Madison fills the frame, dappled with large cloud shadows. Clouds highlight a blue sky. Glen Boulder is indicated by the yellow arrow. View along the trail crossing the Imp Face valley headwall, showing the ups and downs and the fallen young trees. Erosion exposes a network of roots on the headwall portion of the Imp Face Trail.
