New England Trail Review

Shining Wall

A two hundred foot slab perched halfway up a mountain, with water seeping down its surface.

Summary

This trail is exciting and offers more waterfalls than almost any other trail. It follows the Falling Waters trail to the Shining Wall spur, and descends to the base of the Shining Wall. Three major waterfalls are part of the ascent: Stairs, Swiftwater, and Cloudland. There are also a variety of cascades, and tributary falls. At the time of our visit, many different types of mushrooms were fruiting, and some uncommon varieties were seen and photographed. This hike could be combined with an ascent of Little Haystack, Mt. Lincoln or Mt. Lafayette. The Shining Wall is visible from Lonesome Lake and from the park across Rt 93.

Waterfall Trail Warning

This trail has the potential to cause significant injury, as a result of its course across steep rock slabs, rounded boulders, and the cascade itself.

A nearly double peaked mountain, foliage blued by distance, marked with a triangular grey rock wall. A set of rounded grey rock plates leads left with bushes to the right. A rushing stream with trees beyond; sunbeams are cast down on the stream through humid air. A rough surfaced granite slab in bright sunlight contrasts with the shaded forest (and two hikers in shade) beyond. A mossy cavity in layers of fallen trees.
