New England Trail Review

Purgatory Chasm

Click here to go to the index page...

A glacially modified gash in the Massachusetts landscape.

Summary

This trail runs from the parking lot, south through a steep, boulder filled chasm, then loops to the east, up onto the ground overlooking the chasm.

This is a highly popular state park, and you are advised to avoid it on weekends. Though the photos show a largely empty area, this is only through artful framing and timing.

The trail itself is particularly rugged for about a quarter mile and does offer situations in which injury can occur. It is best to wear excellent hiking boots with ankle support.

Rock climbing is allowed in the park, but a permit is required. Be prepared to show and demonstrate your equipment to a ranger.

A tan path between a boulder on the left and a rock on the right, both slightly green with algae. A grey cliff shows the curve of uplifted and distorted layers. A boulder broken into two pieces with a split that looks like a path heading toward a tree. A blocky cave filled with rocks. Looking up at complex small blocks of rock breakage on an overhang.
