Historic Buildings, Artifacts, and Locations

A distant view of two major buildings from the colonial era - to the right, a white building (Viets) and to the left, the brown and orange prison buildings.
Old buildings, gravestones, signs and mountain spots with history...

Human Artifacts

Looking up at the experimental windmill and a passing plane.
Cool stuff seen on the trail, built, left or made by people...

Ice and Snow

A lacy fabric of ice with dark soil behind it.
Ice and snow take on many fascinating forms, and can tell a story of brief events...

Krummholz

The weathered white spines of a dead pine krummholz stick out from the low green bushes.
These stunted trees exist mostly above treeline. Krummholz can be over a hundred years old, and, if these trees were in the valley, they might be over fifty feet high. But above treeline, they are only a few feet tall.

Markers

An aged bronze disk marked with the date of the survey and who to contact, in the center of a stone on the summit.
Survey marks that identify the summit, or special trail markings.
