Airline and Israel Ridge Trail - King Ravine Headwall

This view across King Ravine shows the snow on the headwall. This is a north facing slope that keeps snow longer, but these summits are high enough that there is still snow here at this time in the spring.

Airline and Israel Ridge Trail - Snow River

The snow and ice are thicker here - though they don't extend into the woods. For now there are still places to walk that are free of snow and ice. This will change as we go higher.

Airline and Israel Ridge Trail - Ice Hollow

At this point on the hike, we were startled to start seeing ice in hollows beside the trail. Little did we know the amount of ice and snow that would choke the trail at higher alttitudes.

Harts Pond - Fallen Trees And Snow

Though the snow is no longer heavy, at one point, snow and ice were enough to bend and knock down trees.

Harts Pond - Ice Chunks In The Stream

Repeated passage of snowmobiles over the stream smashed the ice covering, which can be seen to be several inches thick. You can see the layered structure of the ice in the piece to the lower right. There is one large "foamy" layer contrasting with a set of thin, transparent layers. Each probably formed in different ways.
