West Peak / Metacomet Trail - Shaved Tree

This section of the trail moves inward from the ridge, into an area with noticeable tree damage, mostly from low fires and storms. This particular tree has had a limb broken away so smoothly as to look almost as if it has been shaved with a table saw. This is probably a consequence of the wood grain, as the limb is about fifteen feet above the ground, but it is not impossible that a broken limb was removed by man.

The rough triangular area near the top of the break is probably the knot that represents the wood of the other limb, which did not break away.

Harts Pond - Barbed Wire Through A Tree

This tree apparently grew up through barbed wire. The scars from where it grew around the wire are visible, and probably took decades to form.

Mount Grace - Splintered Stump

Some force broke this tree tunk, even though it appears to be healthy and otherwise fresh. Perhaps this was caused by people or by a very strong storm. There was no sign of the top of the tree in the area, however.
