West Peak / Metacomet Trail - Ara and the Outdoor Fireplace

Ara looks at the outdoor fireplace at the southwest edge of West Peak. The origin and purpose of the fireplace are unknown, but it was created with a crude use of native stone and an older form of concrete.

A frog and a worm act as warning signs that the water from this spring, like all water sources in the woods, should not be used without purification.

This "shrine" seems to enclose a small spring that overflows onto the trail.

West Peak / Metacomet Trail - The Gate Entrance

From parking at the trailhead, there is a short trail fragment that leads to this entrance to a bridge that crosses I-691. The columns are to prevent ATV traffic from this side of the bridge, and are a little narrow even for hikers, at least when a large pack is worn.
