West Peak / Metacomet Trail - Steep Talus Slope and Fallen Tree Below the trail, the talus slopes steeply between the lobes of West Peak. Over the years, trees have grown, aged and died. Below, a driftwood tree weathers in the sun. Beyond, the forest extends down to Rt 691. See also… 5/28/2005 |

West Peak / Metacomet Trail - Unidentified Slimy Mushroom This mushroom may be a "Parrot" mushroom (Hygrophorus pittacinus). Many mushrooms have slime coatings, for reasons not well understood. It may simply be a side effect of their growth process, it may protect the mushroom from bacteria or insects, or it may have some other purpose. See also… 5/28/2005 |

West Peak / Metacomet Trail - Grassy Grove Following the cliff edge west is not exactly on the trail, but is part of the fun of exploring this area of the summit. In this little alcove to the west north west of the summit, a sheltered spot provides a home for a low but thick area of "hairy" grass that glows beautifully in the sun. Grass like this is an unusual sight on Metacomet Trail ridges, but is not uncommon on the west side of West Peak. See also… 5/28/2005 |
