Monadnock / Marlboro Trail - Perspective Tricks

This view of two ponds and the valley below plays a trick of perspective. The closer area of water is actually a separate pond about fifteen feet above the slight farther area. And that area blends most misleadingly into the landscape beyond, defying scale and distance.

Of course, the stereo vision of humans is not so easily fooled as the camera, and the hiker does not quite get this pleasant and artistic illusion that brings the distant lake (Dublin Pond) right up against the mountain - or perhaps this tiny landscape is much huger, and we are actually in an airplane flying through vast grey mountains.

A complex mix of melting, folding and fractures modify the texture of repeated deposits whose cycles may be hundreds or thousands of years long.
