The area near Watatic has some beaver, as can be seen in this pond in the swamp near the road.

Mount Watatic, Wapack / Midstate Loop - South Side of Watatic

This view from the south side of the mountain shows the swamp and its pool. The excess water has drowned some of the trees at the edge. Swamp and pond are on both sides of the road and may be flooded periodically by runoff from the mountain. The beaver whose homes can be seen across the road may be responsible for swamp and pond.

Mount Watatic, Wapack / Midstate Loop - Eastern Phoebe Nest From Side

Under the park entrance guideboard roof, we found a nest of moss and grass. This is probably an Eastern Phoebe nest, based on the location and presence of the moss.

Mount Watatic, Wapack / Midstate Loop - Eastern Phoebe Nest Top View

This photo of the Eastern Phoebe nest under the roof of the guideboard was taken by holding the digital camera up over the nest and using the autofocus on macro set the sharpness. The four eggs are unusual in being tan, when Phoebe eggs are usually white. Note the one egg that seems to show a bubble of ait at one end.
