 A small but pretty mountain trail in mid-Massachusetts.

Mount Toby / Loop Trail - Entrance and Conglomerate

This large conglomerate boulder is characteristic of the geology of Mt. Toby. Almost unique in the region are these large grained conglomerates.

Here on the lower parts of the mountains are some older trees, like this large old pine.

Mount Toby / Loop Trail - Reddish Crust Fungus

This fungus, Hymenochaete badio-ferruginia, is growing slowly on this fallen trunk across the path.

Mount Toby / Loop Trail - Open Forest

This younger section of the forest shows evidence of a past disturbance - perhaps fire, or farming. The trees are of uniform height and youth, with a stratified understory of still younger trees not yet choked off by the shadow of the developing canopy.

Mount Toby / Loop Trail - Hygrocygbe cantharellus

This very young Chanterelle Waxcap was found just beside the trail, nestled in a pad of bright new moss. The size of the mushroom can be told from the tiny hemlock needles that are nearly its size.
