Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Just On The Ridge At The South End After a steep rise on the flank of the hill, the trail flattens out for most of the rest of its run. This early winter view along the trail is typical, showing the relatively mature forest, the shallow rise topography, and one of many thinly layered sandstone boulders, remnant of a sandstone layer in the predominantly volcanic rock of Peak Mountain. Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Big Boulder On Edge of One of the largest boulders on the Peak Mountain section of the Metacomet Trail, this sandstone relic seems to perch precariously on the edge of the ridge overlooking the Newgate Prison. Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Sun and Shadows Tree shadows are cast long by golden late day sunlight near the halfway point of the Metacomet Trail's Peak Mountain section.
