Applachian Trail / Maine Wilderness - Cool Roots At Hurd Brook

This golden birch tree near Hurd Brook either been undermined by erosion or perhaps simply had a very strange growth pattern. In any event, the roots have formed a complex set of "legs" that seem about to spirit it away.

Harts Pond - Driftwood Knot

This portion of a root on the base of a tree whose root system has detached from the soil shows an almost sculptured shape. This is at the top of the rock ridge near the north end of the trail.

Harts Pond - Roots Lined With Snow

This root system was eroded by age and various fungi and insects. Left behind is this elegant wood flower, a couple of feet in diameter.

Monadnock / Marlboro Trail - Tangled Roots

Erosion in this section of the trail has scraped the roots and stones from the soil and left this very rough terrain.
