Newgate North - Basalt Split By A Tree

Not only is the cyclic heaving of the ground with the freeze/thaw cycle a contributing factor to breaking up the traprock cliff, but so is the action of trees growing from the joints over the course of decades. Obviously, this also generates distortion and damage to the tree.

Great Gulf Trail - Roots and Artist Conk

This set of mushrooms and a tiny world within the roots is just below the Clam Rock Rest area toward the river.

Great Gulf Trail - Stone Enveloped In Root

Climbing down the bank to the river after a short bushwhack, the roots of the neighboring trees can be seen to have enveloped some of the stones from the riverbed. The lichen and moss helps to make the stone and the roots look very similar.

Mount Hale - Birches Straddle Boulder

This boulder on the upslope side of the lowest stream crossing is wrapped with a birch root that merges into the path at the right.
