West Peak / Metacomet Trail - High Cirrus and Low Cumulus

A dark rock edge is silhouetted to the right and thin films of cloud glow against the sky. A few thicker clouds float below them, edged with faintly colored glows.

The sky above West Peak on this day has a number of small cumulus clouds that represent columns of moist air rising from near the ground into colder regions of the atmosphere. The cirrus clouds feathered above are ice crystals in the high cold regions where the air is thin, and only airplanes fly.

The ice crystals and water droplets act as prisms, and with sunglasses or filters, show a lovely pastel rainbow in the translucent areas of cloud.
