Monadnock / Marlboro Trail - Tiny Mountains

Grey mountainous rocks rise from sparse grass and sand,

The sunlight is at a perfect angle to show the texture of these complex rocks. Like many rocks, when seen without a definable scale, they could just as well be mountains as the ten foot high ridges they actually are.

The  bands and cracks show the composition of this metamorphic stone from the heating of rock that had been laid down in the bottoms of lakes or seas millions of years ago. A complex mix of melting, folding and fractures modify the texture of repeated deposits whose cycles may be hundreds or thousands of years long.
