Appalachian Trail / Mount Katahdin - Solution Pocket Near The Summit |

This smooth featured opening is most likely eroded by a combination of glacial action, erosion from weather, and the weakness of this portion of the rock to being dissolved by water. The lichens are typical alpine lichens for New England (Rhizocarpon, Arctoparmelia) , and nearly completely cover the rock. Sand has collected in the bottom of the pit. Some pits such as these are believed to result from rapidly flowing water that swirls small rocks into spirals that wear away the rock. 6/11/2005
