Mount Toby / Loop Trail - Conglomerate Wave

A small cliff like a nearly breaking wave, dark, studded with separate rocks.

The conglomerate of Mt. Toby here shows itself as a small cliff, studded with cobblestones in a matrix. The material is rough enough for lichens and mosses in the exposed areas, and other lichens and algae in the protected overhang.

This material formed from rounded cobble and pebble sized rock fragments glued together by a matrix of silica, calcite, or iron oxides in response to river movement or ocean wave action. It might also have formed from rocks left behind with the retreat of the glacier.
