Pine Mountain Summit Scarring |

The summit of Pine Mountain offers a unique sight in the White Mountains - a flat, grooved slab, tilted at a moderate angle. The grooves are probably caused by the varying hardness of the layers of rock. This rock is metamorphic - it started as a sedimentary rock, layered from many cycles or seasons of deposition by wind or water, and was modified by heat and pressure into its current form. The layers were not of equivalent hardness, and ages of rain and cold/ heat cycles have eaten away at some layers more than others. 8/1/2001 |
