Tariffville Gorge / Metacomet - Big Old Tree

An array of trees, sidelit by the sun to the right, one of them huge, old and gnarly.

One of the features of the southern part of the trail are several large old trees, of which this is one. The trunks are at least four or five feet in diameter, and the trees may be as much as a hundred years old. This tree has a very early branching compared to its younger neighbors, which makes it look at little like a tentacled organism - perhaps a squid or a hydra.
