A tiny island with rocks, grass and sticks set against a backdrop of calm water.

A tiny island in the stream gives the sense of a great place to put a tiny house.

A brilliant blue sky streaked with cirrus, a mountain (Katahdin) in the distance, and a nearby slope of alpine granite with yellowish lichens.

Applachian Trail / Maine Wilderness - View From White Cap Mountain (Panorama)

Looking across about 30 miles back toward Mount Katahdin. Because of the winding nature of the trail, this is about 55 miles of hiking away.

The alpine landscape is pretty normal, with scrubby trees, granite chunks and lemon colored lichen on the stones.

The panorama covers the full 360 degrees and shows Ron displaying his beard.

Applachian Trail / Maine Wilderness - 6/20/05 Events

Discovered a bird we've been hearing is a Field Sparrow. Very elusive. Hardest day so far over White Cap Mountain, Hay Mountain, West Peak and one other - 11 miles. Forgot to mention all the lady slippers we've been seeing. And, every day, our hike is accoimpanied by Wood Thrushes.

Then there's this bird that says "bloink". Can't figure out what it is (Sue says it might be a cowbird).

A raggedly shaped birch with numerous half-cone shaped whitish mushrooms.

Applachian Trail / Maine Wilderness - Birch with Polypores

This birch may be displaying Tinder Polypore mushrooms (Fomes fonentarius). It is possible that the fungus has affected the tree's growth and created these somewhat wild branchings.

This "fairy apartment house" is near Sidney Tappan Campsite between West Peak and Gulf Hagas Mountain. These are downridge from White Cap Mountain.
