The largest mountain in Maine is either the start or the end of the Appalachian Trail, depending on which way you go - for North to South Hikers, it's the beginning.

A rocky landscape with low plants and a cairn in the distance, with the fog hiding the greater distance.

Appalachian Trail / Mount Katahdin - Alpine Plateau

Small alpine flowers and tufted plants sheltering between rocks are characteristic of the Katahdin alpine plateau. The fog, of course, is cloud, and though it can't be seen in the image, winds are 30-40 mph

The cairn in the distance helps hikers follow the trail even in these low visibility conditions.

These boulders litter the summit plateau, remnants of long ago geological activity. The clouds are hiding the full distance, and make it harder to find the summit.
