Bear Mountain: Appalachian Trail / Paradise Lane Loop - Heading For Undermountain Trail

This section of the trail traverses a more normal young forest with only a few widely separated laurels.

Three tiny dark brown mushrooms with thin ochre stems rise from rotted wood. The right two are merged at the cap.

Bear Mountain: Appalachian Trail / Paradise Lane Loop - Merged Mushroom Caps

Two of these tiny mushrooms share part of their caps. This may be an accident that occurred during their emergence, or may be a genetic accident. Most likely they did not completely shed the protective veil that surrounds some immature mushrooms.
