This view to the southwest shows the flatter land in that direction. To the leftmost side of the image, there is a mountain which is probably Mount Wachusett.

A conifer bark with rust colored fresh holes exuding sap.

Mount Watatic, Wapack / Midstate Loop - Woodpecker Holes

Perhaps left by Downy or Hairy Woodpeckers, or perhaps the Common Flicker, these holes are places where the bird pecked into the wood to try to capture ants or other insects, using beak and flexible tongue.

A greyish wood with wrinkles like a face with aged skin.

Mount Watatic, Wapack / Midstate Loop - Waved Wood

This shows a burl without bark. What causes this sort of formation is not strictly known, but may be genetics, disease, mutation, a tumor, or something completely different.
