A flat trail section looks toward one of many thin layered sandstone boulders. Early winter trees let in low slanting yellow light onto the leaves.

Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Just On The Ridge At The South End

After a steep rise on the flank of the hill, the trail flattens out for most of the rest of its run. This early winter view along the trail is typical, showing the relatively mature forest, the shallow rise topography, and one of many thinly layered sandstone boulders, remnant of a sandstone layer in the predominantly volcanic rock of Peak Mountain.

Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Atmospheric Perspective

Looking back along the trail, you can see the haze of this early winter day (which offered temperatures in the fifties). The signature blue blaze of the Metacomet Trail is barely on a distant background tree.

Lurking in the shadows, this multi-leveled sandstone boulder is one of the largest features on the trail.

Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Big Boulder On Edge of

One of the largest boulders on the Peak Mountain section of the Metacomet Trail, this sandstone relic seems to perch precariously on the edge of the ridge overlooking the Newgate Prison. Its many plates show many periods of sediment deposition before the formation of this boulder from the remnants of some ancient lake bottom.

Tree shadows are cast long by golden late day sunlight near the halfway point of the Metacomet Trail's Peak Mountain section.

Tree shadows are cast long by golden late day sunlight near the halfway point of the Metacomet Trail's Peak Mountain section. In this area, the trail actually slopes briefly downward before rising again on the flanks of the summit.

Two trees on either side of the path are arched so that their crowns actually touch the ground.

Peak Mountain / Metacomet Trail - Walking Into The Arched Trees

Some strange accident years ago (possibly an ice storm) bent these mature trees into an arch, with their crowns interlocked on the ground.
