Monadnock / White Arrow Bushwack - View While Crossing Below the Summit

This is a cautionary picture of the summit. This place is crowded - except in the winter. We often joke that it is "the vertical beach".

While the images we show at New England Trail Review avoid showing crowds, Monadnock and its trails are some of the most crowded in New England. Still, there are some trails that avoid the crowds, and you can also pick less traveled seasons like early and late winter (but beware of the weather).

Grand Monadnock - Summit View From A Distance

This image shows a closeup view of the summit and flanks of Mount Monadnock seen from Rt 124 where it crosses Perkins Pond, looking north from the road.

The summit has been barren since the 19th century, when there was a resort hotel on the summit. A variety of uncontrolled fires, some supposedly to drive off wolves, burned away critical portions of the vegetation. Since then, severe erosion and the effects of summer and winter weather have created and maintained a treeline at a far lower altitude than usually found (in the Presidentials of norther New Hampshire, treeline is usually around 4000 feet).
